... According to officially recorded World Health Organization (WHO) figures, COVID-19 has, so far, claimed 6,460,000 lives. The true number may be much higher – potentially up to 22 million. The International Monetary Fund estimates a cumulative economic loss of USD 11 trillion over 2020-21, with an additional USD 12.5 trillion expected through 2024. Given this cataclysmic impact, it is critical the knowledge gained from combatting COVID-19 is utilised to prevent a similar-sized outbreak in the future.
