The meteoric growth of ESG investing has fostered a great deal of misconceptions. Invesco examine two of the commonly encountered “myths”.

... First, it is often claimed that responsible investing is only possible at the expense of performance. Second, it is claimed that implementing an ESG strategy requires large-scale portfolio changes and divestment. Invesco show that both claims are not necessarily correct. There are good reasons for outperformance by companies with sound ESG policies, and there are alternatives to divestment – most notably engagement.
