Aberdeen plc has recently announced a strategic decision to use its staff defined benefit scheme surplus to fully fund ongoing contributions to its defined contribution scheme. This move extends the investment horizon for the scheme and supports a greater allocation to growth assets and private markets to enhance returns.

During this session, the event speakers compared:

  • Risk budget.

  • Cashflow matching.

  • Environmental and sustainable policies.

  • Using private credit to enhance yields.

  • Growth assets such as infra equity.

The Aberdeen Investments team highlighted how the extended investment horizon of a run-on strategy or open schemes, like local government pension schemes (LGPS), bypass the insurance capital requirements of a bulk purchase annuity transaction, offering greater flexibility to pursue higher yields while maintaining a sustainable investment strategy.
