The Impact Investing Principles for Pensions are a practical guide to impact investment and provide four concrete steps pension schemes can take to pursue an impact investing strategy. They are relevant for pension funds, and also their advisers, managers and peers. Drawn up to meet the growing need for best practice guidelines on how to set, implement, review and measure an impact investment strategy, the Principles were designed by the Impact Investing Institute and Pensions for Purpose in consultation with leading practitioners and with input from stakeholders including pension schemes, investment consultants, managers and member associations.
The upcoming relaunch of the Principles, is the result of invaluable input from the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) in collaboration with the Impact Investing Institute and Pensions for Purpose. In the dynamic impact, investment and pensions space nothing stands still, so to reflect best practice and put pension schemes, their advisers and managers in a position to integrate impact into their investments, we collectively evolved the Principles. The updated Principles will offer a more comprehensive framework for the integration of impact: how pensions can set, implement and contribute towards the impact agenda; and the updated resources available to support them throughout this journey.

Speakers' biographies
Joanna Sharples, Chief Investment Officer, Aon DC Solutions
Joanna is a Senior Partner in Aon's Investment Practice and is the Chief Investment Officer for Aon’s DC Solutions. She has over 20 years’ experience in the pension and investment industry and is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
Joanna is responsible for the development and implementation of delegated investment solutions for DC pension schemes, working closely with Aon’s UK delegated team. Joanna also leads the development of Aon’s house views around DC investments, in particular default and lifestyle strategies, and sits on the UK DC Investment Committee and UK Investment Policy Group.
Keith Guthrie, Head of Sustainability, Cardano UK and NOW: Pensions
Keith is the Head of Sustainability for Cardano UK and NOW: Pensions, a member of the Sustainability Policy Committee and a partner in the firm. He focuses on the development and integration of sustainability into Cardano’s investment offerings for UK clients and for NOW: Pensions, working closely with their in-house teams, clients and trustees. Before moving to the Sustainability Group in 2023, Keith co-led Cardano’s investment teams for 15 years.
Before joining Cardano in 2008, Keith worked at GAM and RMB International managing a variety of multi-asset portfolios. Keith graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, with a BSc (Hons) in Statistics & Actuarial Science and is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
Christian Rosenholm, Director, Institutional Engagement, The GIIN
Christian focusses on furthering relationships with institutional asset owners to develop ways to systematically integrate impact within investment strategies and approaches, and to help identify opportunities to advance impact investing within institutional asset owner community.
Prior to joining the GIIN, Christian Rosenholm has held several professional positions targeting engagement of the private sector and investors in sustainable development with a commercial mindset. Most recently, he served as the senior ESG advisor at the Danish Sovereign Wealth Fun, EIFO, where he developed a new ESG assessment approach, shaped policies and advised investment teams and investees on sustainability matters.
Christian Rosenholm resides in Denmark, but he has lived and worked for many years in the U.S., Southeast Asia and Africa. In Southeast Asia and the U.S., Christian Rosenholm worked for International Finance Corporation) (IFC) where he was the focal point in developing IFC's impact assessment approach for Private Equity fund investments. He supervised the global impact evaluation program and was one of the original key architects in the development and launch of the Operating Principles for Impact Management.
Bella Landymore, Executive Director, Impact Investing Institute
Bella helped establish the Impact Investing Institute in 2019, leading their programmes to connect private capital to solutions to societal challenges. She joined the Institute from the UK government’s Inclusive Economy Unit, where she was a senior policy advisor on impact investing. During this time, she worked on the Government’s response to the Law Commission’s report on pensions and social investment, and the Prime Minister’s Taskforce on growing a culture of social impact investing in the UK. Before this, Bella worked for UBS Investment Bank in their equities trading businesses in New York and London. Bella started her career in the charity sector and has a bachelor’s degree in Theology.

Bill Manahan, Director of Institutional Solutions, Downing
Bill joined Downing in July 2023 as a Director of Institutional Solutions. He has a wealth of experience in the institutional space - private markets, risk management - across fundraising and business development. He holds a degree in Commerce from University College Dublin and has a post graduate diploma in Law from the Department for international Trade (DIT).
Pippa Rudling, Director, Global Institutional, Jupiter Asset Management
Pippa joined Jupiter in 2023 and is a Director on the Global Institutional team, responsible for consultant relations.
Prior to joining Jupiter, she spent ten years at Aberdeen Asset Management on the consultant relations team, and then four years at the Asset Management Exchange (AMX) as a sales director.
Pippa has an MSc in Latin American Studies from Oxford University and a BA in Comparative American Studies from the University of Warwick.
Simon Males, Executive Director and Head of UK Institutional Business, Tikehau Capital
Simon Males is Executive Director and Head of UK Institutional Business at Tikehau Capital, the €38.8bn global alternative asset management group. Simon has over three decades’ experience working within the UK institutional market, including leadership roles at global asset management firms such as Legal & General Investment Management, PGIM, Pictet Asset Management and F&C (BMO).
More recently, he founded Carrick Roads Capital Limited, an institutional consulting and capital-raising firm. Simon is a member of the Board of AIMSE Europe and has previously been a member of its Advisory Council since 2013. He is also a serving Trustee and Board Director of two UK Charities (North London Hospice and The Pemberton-Barnes Trust) and has previously served as a Trustee of a £130m UK defined benefit corporate pension plan. Simon holds an MBA from London Metropolitan University and several professional qualifications, including the IMC.

Charlotte O'Leary, CEO, Pensions for Purpose
As CEO and an executive director of Pensions for Purpose, Charlotte oversees the running of the business, develops the growth and innovation strategy and looks for opportunities to build partnerships to achieve their mission. She also co-leads the training and Business Briefing service for asset owners and their advisers.
Charlotte is a member of the Sounding Board for the Social Value Portal, the Advisory Board for the Sororum, the pensions expert group for the Global Steering Group for Impact Investing and a member of the Pensions Equity Group.
She has over 15 years of experience in asset management, starting in fund analysis and progressing through to institutional business development, having worked for some well-known institutions, including Jupiter, Pictet and Cambridge Associates. Through these roles, Charlotte has built a knowledge and passion for sustainable investing. She has demonstrated this in co-authoring a paper with the Society for Pension Professionals on social impact investing and speaking on topics such as fee and service transparency at PLSA and Transparency Taskforce events. She worked in partnership with the Impact Investing Institute's to develop the Impact Investing Principles for Pensions.
Pensions for Purpose
Pensions for Purpose exists as a bridge between asset managers, pension funds and their professional advisers, to encourage the flow of capital towards impact investment. Our aim is to empower pension funds to seek positive impact opportunities and mitigate negative impact risks.
Our Community allows members to learn from leaders in the impact investment industry. We provide a trusted environment to interact, collaborate and share knowledge. Members engage in a programme of activity to shape their strategy in ESG, sustainable and impact investments.
