In this training session, Baillie Gifford provided an introduction to what is happening to our natural world and the practical investment implications.  

The session covererd:

  • Why nature matters.
  • Decoding the language of nature.
  • Unpacking climate and nature: similarities and differences.
  • Sources of nature-related risk and opportunity.
  • Range of initiatives underway to address nature-loss (including a deep dive into the TNFD)
  • How one asset manager is starting to think about these issues.

Objective

To increase understanding and knowledge of an emergent area.

Learning outcome

Delegates will have better understanding of how to think about nature-related considerations in the context of their pension funds.

This event was opened to asset owners such as pension fund trustees, in-house executives and independent advisers, professional trustees, government representatives and consultants.

Speaker biography

Siobhan Cleary, SG Specialist, Baillie Gifford

Siobhan ClearySiobhan joined Baillie Gifford in 2022 as an ESG Specialist. Siobhan has spent much of her career working with and inside stock exchanges on aspects of ESG including: how to define the role of stock exchanges in enhancing corporate ESG disclosure, and how to promote sustainability more broadly. In addition to stock exchanges, Siobhan has worked with NGOs, UN bodies, investors and listed companies on a range of topics including: biodiversity, gender equality, human rights and climate change.

Before she joined Baillie Gifford, Siobhan served as a member of the technical expert group of the Task Force on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures and worked with the Science Based Targets Network as their interface with the finance sector. Siobhan has an MSc in Climate Change from King's College London, an MBA from the University of Cape Town and an MA in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins University.

Karen Shackleton, Director and Founder, Pensions for Purpose

Karen has worked in the finance sector for over 30 years. As well as being Founder of Pensions for Purpose, she is Deputy Chair of the Strategic Investment Board for the Ministry of Justice and a non-executive director and Chair of the Board of Resonance Ltd, a social impact investment company. She sits on the Advisory Council of the Impact Investing Institute.

Karen also provides independent investment advice to the London Boroughs of Islington, Camden and Hounslow through MJ Hudson. She was the Chief Executive/Managing Director of AllenbridgeEpic Investment Advisers from 2010 to 2013.

Prior to that, she had ten years' experience as a fund manager and director for County NatWest and BZW Investment Management (now BlackRock).

The Paris Alignment Forum was established by Pensions for Purpose to help pension funds and other asset owners on their journey towards alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
