Pensions for Purpose were delighted to invite Place-Based Impact Investing Forum members to its online all-stakeholder member-only event. This was our quarterly all-stakeholder discussion.

In a conversation with Karen Shackleton, Callum Stewart of Hymans Robertson discussed how pension funds can scope the impact market and identify suitable opportunities, when considering a place-based impact investment allocation.

Sarah Forster and David Greenwood of The Good Economy then presented their plan to develop a platform for learning, matching and sharing place-based impact investing (PBII) opportunities. A key adoption challenge is that the PBII marketplace is nascent and mainstream capital allocators, their risk consultants, and capital seekers lack knowledge and information on impact investing opportunities.

Smaller group breakout sessions then discussed the knowledge and information barriers and tested out market demand, for a platform that will enable participants to keep track of the PBII ecosystem and increase the scale of investment into PBII opportunities. Responses from the session fed into the research being undertaken by The Good Economy.

Who was this event for?

This event was for anyone involved in the governance or management of pension fund assets or other pools of assets, asset managers and other stakeholders, actively engaged and interested in the PBII opportunity. For example, trustees of corporate defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans, LGPS pensions managers and committee members, in-house pension teams, legal, actuarial and investment advisers, asset managers particularly in private capital markets, other investment service providers, local government representatives and other stakeholders involved in developing PBII opportunities.

The questions in the breakout room discussions moderated by our forum sponsors Triple Point were:

  • How would an information platform help you with the challenges you face within the impact sector?
  • What types of information or features would be valuable for your role within the PBII ecosystem?
