Our story

Pensions for Purpose was launched in October 2017 to share ESG, sustainable and impact investment knowledge with pension funds. It evolved into a profit-for-purpose, B Corporation that acts as a bridge between asset owners, their advisers and managers – championing investment decisions that value people, planet and profit.

Born out of a conversation at 'The Gathering', a sector-wide meeting of the UK’s leading social-investment practitioners, Pensions for Purpose was created to provide accessible information to help pension funds invest confidently for positive impact. Since then, Pensions for Purpose has grown from a small founder-led organisation into an independent, purpose-driven business that blends research, Community, learning and policy work to drive systemic change in investment thinking. Our goal is to influence the financial sector – not just pensions, but the ecosystem they depend on – towards long-term, sustainability-aligned decision-making.

Pensions for Purpose is a membership organisation that brings together institutional investors, their managers and advisers to align investment decisions with long-term positive value.

We have been growing our Community of over 500 organisational members and 1,500 individuals, uniting stakeholders to share best practice, and promote understanding of environmental, social and governance (ESG), sustainable and impact investment.

What we do and why it matters

We influence and lead the conversation on integrating sustainability and impact into investments. Through learning, policy insight, structural change guidance and governance support, we help our members embed impact into how they think, operate and invest. Our independence allows us to create a trusted space where our Community can collaborate openly and solve shared challenges.

We believe the investment system must deliver sustainable outcomes – for members and the world we retire into. That’s why we work with institutional investors, policymakers, and other partners who use their agency to shift capital, to drive change and to deliver outcomes that benefit people and planet alongside profits.
